My Health Thoughts For The Weekend
Losing Weight Is Not Enough: Protect Your Strength, Muscle and Future Capability
Weight-loss injections such as Mounjaro and Wegovy can be life-changing when prescribed appropriately, but losing weight quickly can also mean losing muscle and bone alongside body fat. This matters particularly after 50, when muscle mass, strength and bone density are already more difficult to maintain. A lower number on the scales does not automatically mean better health if the weight loss leaves you weaker, less capable and more vulnerable to falls, injury and future frailty.
The best protection is not an occasional workout or a few high-protein meals, but consistency. Regular progressive resistance training gives the body a reason to retain muscle, while sufficient protein provides the raw material needed to repair and maintain it. Whether someone is using weight-loss medication or losing weight without it, strength training and protein intake should be built into the plan from the beginning, not added after strength has already been lost. The goal should be to lose excess body fat while preserving as much strength, muscle and physical capability as possible.
My Podcast Pick For The Weekend
The 5 Things You Need To Build A Rich, Healthy Life | Sahil Bloom
This WHOOP Podcast episode with Sahil Bloom is well worth listening to. Sahil talks about five types of wealth, health, relationships, purpose, time and money, and explains why health is the foundation that allows you to enjoy everything else. The conversation covers the importance of doing hard things before you are forced to, finding a physical challenge that gives you direction, and focusing on the basics of movement, whole foods and sleep rather than chasing every new health trend.
This is particularly relevant after 50. You may have achieved financial or professional success, but that means far less if you no longer have the strength, energy or physical capability to enjoy it. You do not need a perfect routine or an extreme health plan. You need to take responsibility for the small actions you repeat each day because they will determine whether you can continue working, travelling, supporting the people you care about and enjoying the life you have built.
