My Health Read For The Weekend
Why Sleep Quality Matters More After 50
A new study involving more than 95,000 adults found that sleep quality and regularity may matter just as much as the number of hours you spend in bed. Participants wore activity monitors for seven days and were then followed for almost nine years. Greater amounts of estimated REM and deep sleep were associated with lower risks of numerous health conditions, while irregular sleep and frequently waking during the night were associated with greater risk. For most conditions, the lowest risk was found among people sleeping between six and eight hours a night.
This does not prove that poor sleep directly causes these illnesses, and a wrist-worn tracker cannot measure sleep stages as accurately as a clinical sleep study. However, it reinforces the importance of protecting your sleep after 50. Focus less on achieving a perfect sleep score and more on maintaining a regular bedtime, allowing enough time for sleep and noticing whether you wake feeling recovered.
You cannot completely control how much REM or deep sleep you get, but you can create the conditions that support it. Keep your sleep schedule consistent, limit late alcohol and heavy meals, manage evening stimulation and give your body enough time to recover. Sleep is not time lost from your day, it is part of how you remain strong, capable and healthy as you age.

How to Train Your Mind for a Happier, More Resilient Life | Monique Rhodes
Do you control your mind, or does your mind control you?
In the latest episode of The Resilient Life, I speak with happiness strategist Monique Rhodes about why happiness is a skill that can be trained.
We discuss why changing your beliefs is not always enough, what emotional eating may really be giving you, how meditation works like strength training for the mind, and why consistency matters.
We also talk about retirement and the risk of losing the identity, structure, connection and purpose that work has provided for decades.
This is not about pretending everything is positive. Difficult things will still happen. The difference is learning how to respond without allowing one event, one thought or one fear to take control of your day.
It was one of those conversations that made me stop and reconsider parts of my own coaching approach. Enjoy.
