My Health Read For The Weekend
Does Heavier Resistance Training Produce Greater Strength Gains As You Age?
A systematic review of 18 randomised trials, involving 1,283 adults aged 50 and over, found that heavier resistance training produced greater improvements in strength than training with lighter weights. The higher-intensity programmes used loads of at least 70% of the maximum participants could lift once, and delivered considerably better results in leg-press and leg-extension strength. However, heavier training was not clearly superior for improving bone density or reducing falls.
The practical message is not that everyone over 50 should immediately start lifting extremely heavy weights. Good technique, confidence and consistency must come first. Once those foundations are established, however, the resistance needs to become genuinely challenging if strength is going to keep improving. A sensible approach is to progress gradually towards sets that finish with approximately two or three good repetitions still possible, while adapting the exercises and loads around pain, health conditions and experience.

The Hidden Cause Of Brain Fog, Fatigue & Poor Metabolic Health | Dr Will Coll
One of the most common things I hear from people over 50 is that they simply don’t feel as energetic, sharp or resilient as they used to. This episode of The Genius Life explores why brain fog, fatigue and poor metabolic health shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as simply “getting older.” It looks at the relationship between metabolic health, gut health, mitochondrial function, nutrition, fasting and recovery, and how these factors may influence our energy and health as we age.
I think it’s particularly relevant if you want to extend your CapabilitySpan, not simply live longer, but remain strong, energetic, cognitively sharp and physically capable for as long as possible. My advice is to listen for ideas rather than treating everything discussed as a prescription, and ask yourself one question: What am I currently doing every day that is either helping or hindering my energy, metabolic health and ability to remain capable as I get older?
